The gaming and esports industries have continued to grow in recent years. So, it’s no wonder that more and more people are attracted to enter this world. Broadband Savvy has just announced the results of their study regarding a list of ideal cities for gamers and esports lovers.
One of the characteristics that Broadband Savvy uses to determine whether a city is suitable for gamers to live in is the availability of fast internet as well as the cost of internet subscriptions in that city. In addition, they also compared the price of gaming hardware in a city, the number of offline esports tournaments and gaming expos being held in that city, and the number of jobs available in the game world. Two other criteria that are also considered are the cost of living in a city and the availability of 5G.
Score by Region
Savvy Broadband divides the 74 countries they observe into 6 regions, namely North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and Middle East & Africa. Each region has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, cities in Asia – with China and India as exceptions – usually have adequate internet networks at affordable prices, namely Seoul, Hong Kong, and Osaka. In addition, the price of gaming hardware in Asia is also cheaper. Not strange, considering that most hardware is produced in the Asian region.
Meanwhile, one of the advantages of cities in North America is the large number of gaming-related jobs. Austin and Seattle are the two cities that have the most jobs in the gaming industry. It’s just that the cost of living in North American cities is quite high. Internet subscription prices there are also quite expensive. Fortunately, gaming hardware costs less in North America than in Europe.
In the cities of the Blue Continent, the opposite happened. The price of gaming hardware there is more expensive, but internet subscription fees are more affordable than cities in North America. In addition, in several European cities, such as Paris, the number of job offers related to gaming is also quite large.
In South American cities, the advantage they have is the relatively low cost of living. The problem is, not all cities in South America already have 1Gbps internet networks. For example, Bogota. The good news is, in some cities in Central America – such as Mexico City – you can get a decent internet connection for a very reasonable price. Apart from that, in South America, there are also several gaming expos and big esports tournaments being held.
The Oceania region and the Middle East & Africa share the same problem, namely high internet costs. However, internet subscription fees in the Middle East & Africa remain substantially higher than in Oceania. For example, in the United Arab Emirates, a 1Gbps internet subscription fee can be as high as US $ 800.
10 Best Cities for Gamers
Austin, Texas, United States is considered the most ideal city for gamers and esports fans, according to Broadband Savvy. The reason is that the city has fairly fast internet – 138Mbps – and a relatively cheap 1Gbps internet subscription fee of US $ 60. Not only that, the city is also equipped with a 5G network, although it is not evenly distributed throughout the city. In Austin, the number of jobs related to gaming is also quite large. Besides that, the city also often holds gaming expos.
Meanwhile, Seoul, South Korea is in the second place. In terms of internet speed, Seoul wins far from Austin. The average internet speed in the South Korean capital reaches 602Mbps. Not only that, the 1Gbps internet subscription fee is cheaper there, only US $ 33.24. Even so, the number of gaming-related jobs in Seoul is far less than Austin. And although Seoul often hosts esports tournaments, the number of gaming expos being held in Austin is far more than Seoul.
Bucharest was ranked third. The capital city of Romania has an average internet speed that is slightly higher than Austin at 164Mbps. However, the 1Gbps internet subscription fee in the city is much cheaper, less than US $ 10. Bucharest also already has a 5G network. It’s just that the price of gaming hardware in this city is far more expensive than Austin or Seoul. Apart from that, the number of gaming-related jobs here is also far less than Austin.
“Depending on what you are looking for, there are several cities that are ideal for gamers to live in. Cities like Bucharest get high marks because they have fast and cheap internet and low cost of living, ”said Tom Paton, founder of Broadband Savvy, as quoted from their website. “Other cities like Los Angeles and London do have higher living costs, but there, gaming expos and esports competitions are often held there.”

10 Worst Cities for Gamers
Of the 74 cities included in the Broadband Savvy study, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates is in the last rank. One of the reasons is because the city has an internet connection that is not only slow, but also expensive. In Dubai, the average internet speed is only 11 Mbps. Meanwhile, the 1Gbps internet subscription fee is US $ 775. The good news is that the city already has 5G, even though 5G coverage is not evenly distributed across cities. Another reason why Dubai is in the last rank is that there are not many gaming related jobs available in the city.
Meanwhile, Sydney, Australia was ranked second last. Average internet speed in this city is better than Dubai, reaching 26Mbps. The 1Gbps internet subscription fee is also much cheaper, only US $ 112. However, the cost of living in Sydney is expensive. Apart from that, Sydney doesn’t have many job vacancies regarding games.
Abu Dhabi, another city in the United Arab Emirates, was in the third last place. The problem faced by Abu Dhabi is the same as Dubai’s, namely slow internet – 9Mbps average speed – and high internet costs. There, the 1Gbps internet subscription fee also reaches US $ 775. The lower cost of living is one reason why Abu Dhabi ranks better than Dubai.
